Dabbler.ca online - lessons learned
It's been a while since I posted last - for good reason: After launching AndNowYouKnow.net - a site that generated a lot of interest - I learned some lessons about blogging and blogging software.
http://www.andnowyouknow.net is based on the Joomla! platform - a heavy duty Open Source Content Management System (CMS). My understanding at the time of inception was that a CMS would be the best solution for us: It contained advanced user features, content control, banner control etc etc ad nauseaum. Unfortunately it turned out that Joomla! is far too heavy duty for our application and I had to start searching for a better solution.
In the midst of this realization came the problem of how to publish high quality video online. More about this in a later post.
After exploring several options I decided that WordPress was the way to go. But coinciding with this realization came Angela's (the yellow half of Pink & Yellow) decision to leave her job at Citytv and start out on her own with a blog featuring video and articles on anything and everything Vancouver. The idea was sound - she had the experience necessary to pull it off in style - but a platform needed to be built to make it work on the web.
Thus Dabbler.ca was born: a WordPress site based on a mishmash of several theme codes and featuring our new custom built Flash video (flv) player. The site has been in production since June 1st and was properly launched with it's first video today.
So if you like, take a look at Dabbler.ca and see what WordPress, tons of coding, endless hours of frustration and a lot of video production can do.
